Slack

Slack is a chat app for teams. When you connect your Slack workspace to OfficeDash, your office TV can show the latest messages of one public channel, and a second channel can feed the kudos on the TV. You connect it on Integrations.

1. What Slack adds

  • The latest messages of one public channel you choose, in the Slack channel widget.
  • Optionally, kudos from a kudos channel: messages there that mention someone show in the Kudos feed on the TV.

OfficeDash only reads messages from Slack. It never posts, reacts or changes anything in Slack.

2. Connecting and disconnecting

  1. Open Integrations, press Add integration, choose Slack and press Connect. Slack now has its own card on the page, with the status Not connected.
  2. Press Connect with Slack.
  3. Sign in to Slack and approve access for your workspace.
  4. You return to Integrations. The card now shows Connected, the name of your Slack workspace, the Method Slack workspace (OAuth) and the date it was Connected.

If you don't approve access in Slack, nothing is connected and the card says "Access was not granted in Slack, so nothing was connected. Please try again."

To stop using Slack, press Disconnect. To use another Slack workspace, disconnect first, then connect again and choose that workspace.

When Slack no longer accepts the connection, for example because the OfficeDash app was removed from your Slack workspace, the card shows Reconnect needed. Press Connect Slack again and approve access again.

If the card says "Connecting Slack is not available on this server.", the OfficeDash you use is not set up for Slack. Ask whoever runs your OfficeDash.

Only the account holder, and members who are allowed to add integrations, see Connect with Slack and Connect Slack again. Only the account holder, and members who are allowed to edit integrations, can pick channels. Only the account holder, and members who are allowed to remove integrations, see Disconnect. Other members see only the status and the chosen channels.

3. Picking a public channel

  1. On the connected Slack card, open the Public channel list. It shows the public channels of your Slack workspace.
  2. Choose the channel whose messages the TV should show.
  3. Press Save channel. The card shows the chosen channel next to Channel.

Only public channels can be chosen; private channels and direct messages never appear in the list. If your Slack workspace has no public channels, the card says so. If Slack doesn't answer, the card says the channels are unavailable: press Try again.

4. Inviting the bot to the channel

OfficeDash reads a channel through its bot, and the bot can only read channels it has been invited to. After you pick a channel, open that channel in Slack and type:

/invite @OfficeDash

Until the bot is in the channel, the TV shows no messages from it. Do the same for the kudos channel.

5. Privacy

The messages of the chosen channel are shown on the TV, so anyone who can see the TV can read them. The same goes for the kudos channel. Pick channels whose messages may be read by everyone in your office and by visitors.

6. The Slack channel widget

Connecting Slack unlocks one widget for your slides: Slack channel. The store entry lists it under Widgets it adds. It shows the latest messages of the channel you picked on the Slack card, and has no settings of its own: to show another channel, pick it on the card.

Until Slack is connected, the widget store in the slide editor shows "Connect Slack to add 1 widget" instead of the widget. Once it is connected, you add it like any other widget. Which tile sizes it fits is explained in Widgets and tile sizes.

7. The kudos channel

A Slack channel can also feed the kudos on your TV.

  1. On the connected Slack card, open the Kudos channel list and choose a channel.
  2. Press Save kudos channel.
  3. Invite the bot to that channel, as in step 4.

Messages in that channel that mention someone then show as kudos in the Kudos feed widget on the TV. They are read from the channel itself: they are not listed on Kudos and don't wait for approval. To stop, choose None and press Save kudos channel. More about kudos is in Kudos.
