Kudos
A kudo is a short compliment for a colleague, with an emoji and a message, that shows on the office TV. You add and manage kudos on Kudos, colleagues can send one from their phone with the code on the TV, and the Kudos feed widget shows today's kudos on the screen.
1. Add a kudo
- Open Kudos and press New kudo. When the list is still empty, the same button sits under "No kudos yet".
- Fill in For: who the kudo is for. It is required and can be up to 60 characters long. If your account has employees, you search your team and pick a colleague, or choose Other name to type a name for someone who is not on the team list.
- Fill in From (optional): who the kudo is from. Leave it empty to send it anonymously; the kudo then shows "Anonymous".
- Pick an Emoji from the list.
- Write the Message. It is required and can be up to 140 characters long.
- Press Add kudo, or Cancel to close the window without saving.
The kudo is added at the top of the list, newest first, and shows on the TV after its next background refresh.
2. Hide or delete a kudo
- Press Hide on a kudo to take it off the TV without deleting it. It stays on Kudos, marked Hidden. Press Show again to put it back on the TV.
- Press Delete to remove a kudo for good. OfficeDash asks "Delete this kudo? This can't be undone." Confirm with Yes, delete or press Cancel.
3. Send a kudo from a phone
Anyone in the office can send a kudo from their own phone. No account is needed on the phone.
On a paired TV whose dashboard has a Kudos feed widget on at least one slide, the bottom centre of the screen shows a QR code with a line such as "Send kudos at officedash.app/k code K7Q2" next to it. It stays there on every slide, not only on the slide with the widget. That is the default. With the setting Show the send code at the bottom of every slide turned off on Kudos settings, the bottom of the screen stays empty and the link, the code and the QR code show only in the Kudos feed widget itself (see sections 4 and 5).
- Scan the QR code with the phone camera. It opens the send page with the code already filled in. Without the QR code, open the short link in the phone's browser, type the code under Code on the screen and press Continue.
- Fill in the same fields as in the app: For, From (optional), Emoji and Message.
- Press Send kudo.
The code changes every 10 minutes. The previous code stays valid for one more period of 10 minutes, so someone who has just copied it is not turned away. A wrong or expired code shows Code not valid, check the screen: look at the TV again and type the current code.
The code only appears on a paired TV. The widget store, the slide editor and the public demo at /demo show no code and no QR code.
4. Approve phone kudos and the kudos settings
On Kudos settings, the section Kudos sent from a phone decides what happens to kudos that come in from a phone:
- Wait for approval (the default): a phone kudo shows on Kudos marked Waiting for approval and only reaches the TV after you press Approve on it. You can also hide or delete it there.
- Show straight away: a phone kudo reaches the TV at its next refresh. You can still hide or delete it on Kudos.
Under On the TV, the setting Show the send code at the bottom of every slide decides where a paired TV shows the QR code, the link and the code for sending a kudo from a phone:
- On (the default): at the bottom centre of every slide, as described in section 3.
- Off: only in the Kudos feed widget, in a row under its kudos. The QR code shows there on the Full slide, Half-width column and Quarter tiles; the smaller tiles show the link and the code only (see section 5).
Make your choices and press Save: one Save stores both settings. A paired TV picks up the change at its next refresh, without pairing it again. Approving kudos and the kudos settings need access to Kudos in your account; the account holder can always do both. Without that access, Kudos does not appear in the settings.
5. The kudos widget on the TV
A TV shows kudos through the Kudos feed widget. Add it in the widget store of the slide editor: open a dashboard, press Add widget on a spot and pick Kudos feed. It fits the bigger tiles only: Full slide, Half-width column, Third-width column, Quarter, Wide tile and Tall tile. Widgets and tile sizes are explained in Widgets and tile sizes.
What the widget shows:
- Today's visible kudos, newest first. Hidden kudos and phone kudos that are still waiting for approval are left out.
- When not all kudos fit, it pages through them, one page every 10 seconds.
- On a paired TV with Show the send code at the bottom of every slide turned off, a row under the kudos with the link and the code for sending a kudo from a phone, plus the QR code on Full slide, Half-width column and Quarter. With the setting on (the default), the widget shows no code: it is at the bottom of every slide instead.
- With no kudos today, a calm invitation: "No kudos yet. Thank a colleague and it shows up here!"
6. Kudos from Slack
If your account has Slack connected, a Slack channel can feed the kudos widget too. On Integrations, choose a channel as Kudos channel on the Slack card and press Save kudos channel. Messages in that channel that mention someone then show as kudos in the Kudos feed on the TV, so anyone who can see the TV can read them. Invite the OfficeDash bot to the channel first, or its messages cannot be shown.
Kudos from Slack are read from the channel itself: they are not listed on Kudos and do not wait for approval.
